- Denotation: white British people only, bunting, chequered tablecloth, bread and cake stands
- High Class and tradition
- Dominant: proud of being British
- Negotiated: question link to "the Big Issue"
- Oppositional: Object to all-white, middle class.

The Big Issue is a handmade-looking street magazine that was first published in 1991. It is sold by homeless vendors, who will then keep the money they make from sales. The money made by The Big Issue is also used for charities that help people who are living in poverty. The founder of The Big Issue is lord John Bird. As well as being the founder of The Big Issue, he also sits in the house of lords as a crossbencher. He used to be homeless himself as well as lived a very hard life as a young person. - Shelter is a charity for homelessness - close up-eye level, direct address - Direct Address creates a strong connection between the audience and and the person in the shot (equal connection) - Unusual placement of caption on top of the face, it is also transparents. This might reflect urgency of the situation and the fact that the publishers want us to connect with the emotive text due to its placement near the eyes. - Red: connotes danger and urgency. - Red  connotes STOP which could suggest that metaphorical barriers prevent them from getting housing. - No set ethnicity (you never know where they could be from), yet still all hold the same facial expressions shows that homelessness does not discriminate against who it affects or comes into contact with (anyone can be homeless) and regardless of ethnicity, age or gender homelessness effects everyone in the same negative way. - 3 associated issues presented around homelessness:  - losing job  - unethical landl...

1 Theoretical perspective to Big Issue cover

        Dominant and Patriarchal Ideologies about women: Weak, dependent, passive, housewives, kitchen chained, not career driven, sex objects etc. The oppositional reading that the Big issue holds: strong, driven, has her won mind, not presented in a sexually provocative way, not domesticated etc. Another Dominant/patriarchal Ideology: Men can't be feminists and understand emotional topics. The Big Issue's reading: Men can understand and join the movement for equal gender rights, by being feminists. "Pink stinks" suggests that the Big issue think that gender directed clothes and the socialization of children from young to conform to the idea of gender roles is wrong. They are using this statement as a call to action. The fact that the women on the cover is a black women, shows the diversity in a postmodern society.
