Writing task- Young people and radio
Why don't young people actively listen to the radio?
I think one of the main reasons why young people no longer actively listen to the radio is due to the invention of social media and video platforms like YouTube. Young people no longer have to turn on the radio to engage with the outside word and keep up to date with news, music, celebrities etc, it is now available at the tap of a screen, on our smartphones. Instagram and snapchat have explore pages that give us news updates, celeb gossip and new music updates and You tube allows people to catch up on shows that they've missed, like for example the news, and not have to watch or listen to it live , which are easily accessible and can be accessed through a new way of communication that the world is currently obsessed with (the buzz around something new makes it considerably more interesting than the something that is old). Another reason I believe that young people no longer actively listen to the radio may be because some people prefer to watch rather than listen. Due to the introduction of social media and movie sites like Netflix, people have become accustomed to to watching rather than listening, I speak from personal experience as I much prefer to watch the news or entertainment show, rather than listen to it as i find it more direct and personal for me as the audience. A third reason why I believe young people are no longer actively listening to the radio is as the shows and content is no longer appealing. In a very social media world and heavily celebrity influenced world, young people seek celeb gossip/news, social media talks and even documentaries if the topic is relevant to a young person and a post modernist society- BBC radio 4's news and speech programmes lost viewers and music and entertainment shows went up in views. Another reason why young people no longer actively listen to the radio is also because they can not decide what music is played or what content they listen to. Young people nowadays have their own identities and taste which makes them have a strong want to choose what music they listen to and whether or not they want to listen to new stuff. The radio tends to play all types of music and mainly new stuff to keep viewers updated, however the youth tend to prefer to listen to the same stuff that they enjoy on repeat which is not what they radio offers.
What do you think radio 1 need to do in order to increase its share of listeners and gain its audience back?
I think the content on radio 1 needs to have a greater relevance and aim towards young people, that way more young people will feel connected, the show will appeal to them and as young people amke up a large demographic it brings in a lot more viewers.
