The Big Issue is a handmade-looking street magazine that was first published in 1991. It is sold by homeless vendors, who will then keep the money they make from sales. The money made by The Big Issue is also used for charities that help people who are living in poverty. The founder of The Big Issue is lord John Bird. As well as being the founder of The Big Issue, he also sits in the house of lords as a crossbencher. He used to be homeless himself as well as lived a very hard life as a young person. He spent most of his youth stealing, resulting in him being in and out of prison a lot. He was also excluded from school and grew up an orphan. The Big Issue is based on Ethical Capitalism. This means to make money and profit in a moral and compassionate way. The money made from the Big Issue is used to help the homeless and people living in poverty.
